TThe first day of Kartika is said to be known as laguda pratipat. Laguda is ‘Stick or Staff’. Horns of Vrushaba (Indian Breed bull) should be smeared with oil and turmeric powder and Shyamalatha (a kind of climbing creeper (Ichnocarpus Frutescens)) should be tied to them. The cowherds take the bullock through the village in procession on festival day.
This annual celebration dedicated to honour the bull and its immense contribution to agriculture and our society at large, in our culture, is mentioned in the book Kṛiṣhi Parāśhara and has been gaining importance in the country today.
Creating awareness about the importance of the indigenous bulls that are part of our national pride and thereby highlighting the need to protect them. Empowering farmers and honouring their role in rural development by preserving traditional agricultural practices. Giving citizens an opportunity to connect to their cultural roots by recognising the central contributions of the bull for the well-being of our agrarian society. The importance of the Vṛṣabhotsava and its contribution to the cultural heritage of the country, 1st Day of the month of Kartika is celebrated every year as “Vṛṣabhotsava”.
